A Superbly Luxurious and Modern Tile One of our favorite new collections this year is the Basalt Stone Mosaic and Tile series. Even though Basalt tile has been used in architecture since the Roman era, it is now experiencing a resurgence in popularity with designers in-the-know. Characterized by its eternally chic deep charcoal grey color and incredibly soft feel of the Ultra Honed finish, Basalt has a very low degree of color variation. There is rather a subtle degree of light and dark shading, but never too much and always harmonious. Basalt also is a versatile material, with the ability to be specified for interior and exterior application and both walls and floors. Born of hardened molten lava, it is a volcanic stone in the purest sense. It is also known as one of the most dense stones on earth. It has a high compressive strength with great abrasion resistance.
